Upcoming Stuff
Hi everyone,
1) Next Officers’ Meeting will be Sunday, November 6, at 1 pm in Cerritos.
(originally I was thinking 11 am, but then I remembered that I have to work
at the hospital until 12 noon :()
All officers, active volunteers and anyone who’s interested in becoming more
involved in OCA in 2006 is encouraged to attend :-)! Albert Wong wants
to demo the new OCA-Orange County website, so we’re going to hold
the meeting at my house where we have an Internet connection to use :-).
2) Back in February, OCAPICA (Orange County Asian and Pacific Islander
Community Alliance) applied for a grant from the United Way to provide
scholarships to APA high school and college students. Our chapter and
JACL (Japanese American Citizens’ League) signed on as co-organizers.
The good news is that the grant was accepted, and we have now through
the springtime to figure out how to dish out the scholarships, likely
through an essay contest.
I just found out yesterday that OCAPICA would like to have an
initial planning meeting sometime next week (say Tuesday or
Thursday evening) at OCAPICA’s office in Garden Grove
to start figuring out the details. I’ll do my
best to attend, but we could use another person from OCA-OC to go as
well, especially someone interested in working on a high school/
college scholarship program. Let me know if you’re interested!
3) Caroline Su is proposing the following as a cultural event for us:

Hello Jhemon,
I just received the broucher from Irvine Barclay Theater.
Wed, Nov. 16 at 8pm
Seoul Performing Arts Company: Tradition and Creation

I think this will be a great event for OCA-OC chapter.
Please advice.
To me, it looks like a good event, although it’s on a Wednesday
night, and tickets are $33 and $38. What do you all think?
Thanks,
Jhemon

Want to talk about something about something besides the
usual “What’s your name?” and “What do you do for a living?”? Join
us for this series of informal chats over coffee (or the beverage of
your choice) in Orange County where you can share your opinions and
experiences and ask anything that’s on your mind in a casual setting.
This month we’re talking about two topics:
1) As an Asian American, how do you strike the balance between your
Asian side and your American side? Is being Americanized blending in
or selling out? Are Asian culture and values trendy or backwards?
Do you assimilate or differentiate?
2) With the November Special Election around the corner, we’ll talk
about the upcoming propositions on the ballot — what do you think
about them?
Looking for New Officers for 2006!
Hi everyone,
OCA-Orange County is looking for new officers for 2006! If
you’re in or near Orange County and are interested in education,
activism and volunteering in the Asian American community, OCA is the
group for you! Develop skills in running an organization and event
planning. We’re very open to the input and involvement of new
officers and members - you can make a difference right from the
start - so if you have enthusiasm and some time to spare, we’d love
to have you onboard.
If you’re interested or have questions, please e-mail Jhemon
Lee at jhemon@post.harvard.edu
Sincerely,
Jhemon Lee
President, OCA-Orange County
