JOURNEY TO THE WEST

JOURNEY TO THE WEST

Saturday, Jan. 14 is the opening day for the exhibit “Journey to the West on the Silk Road,” on view at Evergreen Books Exhibition Hall, 760 W. Garvey Avenue in Monterey Park. It is a photographic chronicle retracing the heroic 7th-century journey from China to India by Buddhist monk XuanZang (Hsuan Tsang).

Using XuanZang’s “The Journey to the West in the Tang Dynasty” as a guide, a team of reporters and photograph! ers from Rhythms Monthly traveled from Xian, China, deep into the Gobi Desert and Central Asia. The exhibition includes more than 150 photographs taken over five years.

While retracing XuanZang’s journey, the team witnessed the destruction of the two giant Buddha statues in Bamiyan and the rebirth of Afghanistan. They visited politically turbulent Kashmir and finally arrived in India.

The exhibition is sponsored by the nonprofit Tzu Chi Foundation to bridge communication among different ethnic groups and to foster understanding among different religions and cultures.

This exhibit runs through Jan. 22. Hours are Monday through Thursday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission is free and 90-minute guided group tours for 10 or more are available.
