GATEWAY TO GOLD MOUNTAIN EXHIBIT
Saturday, March 18, 11 am - 4 pm
This exhibit chronicles the immigration experience of thousands of Asians who came to America between 1910 and 1940. Ferried from ships to the isolated Angel Island Immigration Station in San Francisco Bay, they were greeted by an America far different than the land of opportunity that many called “Gold Mountain.” Through historic photos, text, and poetry, this exhibit discusses the attitudes, hopes, and fears of the immigrants, as well as the discrimination they encountered trying to gain entry to America. Exhibit text is in both Chinese and English. This story has particular importance for the Asian American community as well as continued relevance for the larger community on the issue of immigrant detention in this country even over sixty years after the Immigration Station on Angel Island closed. For more information, visit www.aiisf.com or call (415) 561-2160.
AIISF’s traveling exhibit, Gateway to Gold Mountain, is on display at Casa Romantica Cultural Center and Gardens in San Clemente, California through March 19. On March 18, in conjunction with the Gateway exhibit, Casa Romantica is holding a special free day for community members.
