APACLC Needs volunteers in OC

Dear APALC friends,

I am very excited to announce the first of what I hope to be many “regular” pro bono legal clinics benefiting the API community in Orange County!

Date: Saturday, March 31, 2007
Time: 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Location: Nguoi-Viet Daily News, Wesminster

I will follow up with more details in the coming weeks. Meanwhile, I really need all of your help to get the word out and to recruit volunteer attorneys and law students or bilingual speakers who can help with translation. Thanks in advance for your participation and assistance and please feel free to contact me with questions or concerns. Hope to see you all there!

If you can join us for one or all(!), we would be very grateful. Please call or email me at (213) 977-7500 x217, clee@apalc.org, or contact Mark Yoshida at (213)977-7500 x247, myoshida@apalc.org. These workshops are great opportunities for groups, clubs, social gatherings, and organizations that want to volunteer for meaningful community service projects this year. Please spread to the word out to any that are interested in volunteering!
Also for some great news, our citizenship work has been refunded for another year, 2007 - 2008! This would not have been possible without all your assistance and support. This new grant is a joint collaborative of 3 other organizations which are: Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles (LAFLA), International Rescue Committee (IRC), Neighborhood Legal Services, and APALC. Our first citizenship workshop as a collaborative will be on February 17, 2007 and we expect this workshop to be quite large. More details about this workshop will be announced. We hope you’ll have that day open to volunteer. We are expecting to have more large workshops as a collaborative over the year.
As always, we appreciate any comments you have that would improve our workshops. Thanks and hope to see you at our workshops!

Asian Pacific Islander Women Make Mark In US Politics

AsianWeek.com
Last week, the first woman in American history took the gavel as the Speaker of the House of Representatives. Third in line for the Oval Office, behind only Vice President Cheney if Bush dies is impeached, or is unable to serve as president, Nancy Pelosi is a 66-year-old grandmother who represents the generation of feminist women who came of age in the 1960s.

Asian Pacific Americans also had a lot to cheer about last week, for similar reasons. On the federal level, Mazie Hirono was sworn in as the newest APA member of Congress. She inherits the seat held for many years by the legendary Rep. Patsy Mink, and joins two other strong APA women in Congress: Rep. Doris Matsui (D-Calif.) and Rep. Madeleine Bordallo (D-Guam). While we are still waiting for our first female APA United States senator, it is good to see the number of female APA representatives climbing again.
