“Thousands of lives transformed”

March 5, 2007

Dear Community Partners and Concerned Citizens:

Are you aware of the recent proposals by the United States Citizenship
and Immigration Services (formerly the Immigration and Naturalization
Services, or INS) to raise naturalization and other immigration-related
applications fees, averaging by as much as 69%? For a family of four
immigrants, the cost of applying for the United States citizenship could
be as high as $2,700! To seek permanent resident status (or “green
card”), one may have to pay as much as $985, a jump of 150% from the
current $395.

Is our government telling us that only the rich and those who can afford
such outrageous amounts are entitled to citizenship or permanent
resident status or be reunited with their family? With an already broken
immigration system, is our citizenship also in crisis?

On behalf of the Refugee Forum of Orange County, St. Anselm’s will be
hosting a very important informational day, Citizenship in Crisis, on
March 15, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., at 13091 Galway, Garden Grove. This
forum is designed to inform our community partners and citizens about
these proposed changes in the naturalization process of our country-a
land of immigrants from the world over since its birth-and various
immigration service fee increases, some of them nothing short of
outrageous. The forum aims to empower our community partners and
citizens to fight back at the proposed changes and barriers that will,
undoubtedly, threaten immigrants and refugees from becoming American
citizens.

For more information and an opportunity to voice your opinion, please
attend our community forum, for time is running out! Make your voice
heard and take a stand to support individuals from around the world who
wish to become Americans and pursue the democratic dream.

Sincerely,

Refugee Forum of Orange County
