APALC Need Immigrant Stories NOW!

The U.S. Senate and the White House made the announcement yesterday of an “agreement” to move forward on immigration reform. The actual language of the “bill” probably won’t be available till late today, with the Senate slated to begin floor debate on Monday.

APALC has been requested by various national news media, including the Washington Post, for stories of folks who will be impacted by this latest proposal, which may effectively do away with much of the family-based immigration. If you know of anyone who applied for a relative BEFORE May 2005, and is willing to speak to the media about their situation, PLEASE CONTACT TAMMY PENG (APALC) AT ONCE at a href=”mailto:tpeng@apalc.org”>tpeng@apalc.org. For more information, please go to www.apalc.org.

Push to achieve tied to suicide in Asian-American women - CNN.com

Push to achieve tied to suicide in Asian-American women - CNN.com
One evening in 1990, Eliza Noh hung up the phone with her sister. Disturbed about the conversation, Noh immediately started writing a letter to her sister, a college student who was often depressed. “I told her I supported her, and I encouraged her,” Noh says.

But her sister never read the letter. By the time it arrived, shed killed herself.

Moved by that tragedy, Noh has spent much of her professional life studying depression and suicide among Asian-American women. An assistant professor of Asian-American studies at California State University at Fullerton, Noh has read the sobering statistics from the Department of Health and Human Services: Asian-American women ages 15-24 have the highest suicide rate of women in any race or ethnic group in that age group. Suicide is the second-leading cause of death for Asian-American women in that age range.

Celebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage Month in May

History of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month

May is Asian Pacific American Heritage Month — a celebration of Asians and Pacific Islanders in the United States. APA Heritage Month originated through a congressional bill in June 1977, by Representatives Frank Horton of New York and Norman Y. Mineta of California to proclaim the first ten days of May as Asian Pacific Heritage Week. On October 5, 1978, President Jimmy Carter signed a Joint Resolution designating the annual celebration. In May 1990, the holiday was expanded further when President George H. W. Bush designated May to be Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. (NAAO)
