Asian Pacific American Legal Center (Los Angeles, CA)

The Asian Pacific American Legal Center is seeking an Equal Justice Works AmeriCorps Attorney who will work in APALC’s Immigration and Citizenship Project and recruit, train, and manage interns, volunteers, and pro bono attorneys; serve as a liaison with local law schools; work with community-based organizations to address legal needs expressed in the community; and develop and oversee legal clinics. The position will be located in APALC’s main office in downtown Los Angeles, although there may be opportunities to work with APALC’s office in Orange County (Garden Grove).

ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION
APALC is the nation’s largest legal organization serving the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities. Founded in 1983, APALC is a unique organization that combines traditional legal services with civil rights advocacy and leadership development. The majority of clients served by APALC are limited English proficient, speaking any of several dozen languages. As a result, it is critical for APALC to develop and expand a comprehensive volunteer and pro bono program to effectively provide direct legal services to the broadest range of AAPI community members.

POSITION DESCRIPTION
The APALC Equal Justice Works AmeriCorps Attorney will work in the Immigration and Citizenship Project to oversee and staff APALC’s naturalization and other immigration clinics, including recruiting, training, and managing law student and pro bono attorney volunteers to deliver services. This Equal Justice Works AmeriCorps Attorney will also develop educational materials on immigration focused on APALC’s LEP client community, and provide direct legal assistance to clients in the area of immigration.

Start Date is ASAP. Term of service is at least 11 months for the first year, with a possibility of renewal for a second term.

QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates should be admitted to the California Bar or awaiting bar results as of August 2007. Candidates should also have:
· Must also be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or legal permanent resident; · Excellent communication including oral, written, and research skills; · Experience working with community groups, bar associations, and other organizations; · Familiarity with and interest in working with immigrant communities; · Commitment to public interest work and strong desire to assist indigent clients; · Possession of a valid driver’s license, access to a vehicle and proof of insurance; · Bilingual in an Asian language or Spanish preferred; · Experience organizing or working with volunteers preferred; · Experience with advocacy preferred; and · Experience with Southern California community groups and institutions a plus.

PRO BONO LEGAL CORPS BENEFITS
In exchange for completing each 11 month term of service, Equal Justice Works AmeriCorps Attorneys will receive the following:
• A living allowance of $22,200;
• Health insurance;
• Child care assistance (if income eligible); • $4,725 for education loan repayment or assistance; • Eligibility to place all qualified student loans into forbearance and receive an interest accrual payment at the end of PBLC service; • The opportunity to attend national training programs to develop leadership skills, learn effective practices and meet colleagues from across the country; • The chance to make a difference by building capacity in low-income communities and developing a future generation of lawyers committed to pro bono service.

SUPPLEMENTAL BENEFITS
In addition to the standard Pro Bono Legal Corps benefits, APALC will also provide:
· $500 per month living stipend;
· $50 to $125 per month language stipend based on level of fluency; · Bar dues and reasonable MCLE training costs; · Parking and local mileage reimbursement; · Retirement plan contribution after one year; and · Staff training in relevant areas of law and other training as needed.

The Asian Pacific American Legal Center (APALC) seeks candidates for two open legal positions. APALC is also interested in recent law school graduates or current judicial clerks that would like to apply for a public interest legal fellowship. Interested applicants are encouraged to apply immediately, as directed in each job announcement.

SENIOR STAFF ATTORNEY, Impact Litigation — This full-time position will join APALC’s dedicated litigation team and will be responsible for coordinating, strategizing and working on impact litigation cases that advance civil rights and social and economic justice. The ideal candidate will have at least four years of litigation experience and a demonstrated commitment to public interest work, civil rights and community empowerment. This position is available in September but will remain open until filled.

COMMUNITY LEGAL ADVOCATE, Asian Language Legal Intake Project (ALLIP) — This is a full-time bilingual (Korean) position that staffs the Asian Language Legal Intake Project, a legal hotline that expands access to justice for low-income limited English speaking immigrants. Coordinated with three other non-profit legal services programs, ALLIP is recognized nationally as a model for its innovation and its ability to expand legal representation and advice to Asian clients in Los Angeles and Orange Counties. The position is available immediately and will remain open until filled.

LEGAL FELLOWSHIP CANDIDATE, Impact Litigation — APALC seeks recent law graduates and current law clerks to apply for Skadden, Equal Justice Works, and other public interest fellowships to work with its civil rights litigation team. Potential areas of focus include: low-wage immigrant workers’ rights; language rights; access to health and discrimination in health access; immigration; government benefits; racial profiling; and consumer rights. Candidates are also invited to propose their own project ideas.

Known as an advocate of volunteerism, she is heavily involved in the community in more than 10 non-profit organizations in the areas of health, senior well-fare, social, education, culture, and art. In 2006 she was selected by KCET for the “Local Hero of the Year Awards” in Education. She was the main producer of this year’s SEMISCON Performance at the Ford Theatre. This will mark the first occasion that she will be honored by a Taiwanese organization.
