OCA MENTORING ASIAN AMERICAN PROFESSIONALS (MAAP) Orange County

FACT SHEET

Co-Sponsoring Organizations & Funder: OCA National Center in partnership with OCA-Orange County and NAAAP Orange County—funding provided by UPS Foundation.

Purpose & Background: To provide a mutually beneficial platform for networking and skills building that will prepare individuals to participate in an engaged mentoring dialogue. Since 2008, the OCA MAAP Program has operated in Atlanta, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Washington, DC—with cumulative national enrollment of over 80 individuals engaged in skills building, relationship development, mentoring dialogue, and networking . In 2010, MAAP will introduce new mentoring cycles in Chicago, New Jersey, and Orange County.

Target Audience & Enrollment Goal: Entry Level to Mid Career Asian Pacific Islander Professionals in Private and Public Sectors. The goal is to enroll 20 mentees and 20 mentors.

Uniqueness of Methodology: While most of the mentoring programs focus on the matching of mentors and mentees, the MAAP Program focuses more on the practice of developing the engaged, meaningful, and mutually beneficial mentoring dialogue and relationship building process. Curricula developed are designed to support the depth and breadth of the mentoring dialogue by offering a focused structure and a process. Moreover, the access to the MAAP Network of mentoring practitioners will also provide additional opportunities to connect with other program participants to seek peer feedback and collaborations to further personal and professional goals.

Other mentoring programs usually lasts for six to twelve months and outcomes for 1:1 meetings seem to be less than three hours cumulative vs. our five plus hours. Most programs also do not always include curricula for social responsibility and career planning.

Duration & Time Commitment: Program cycle spans approximately three months—October 2010 through January 2011—which includes the one-on-one mentoring sessions and the three network convenings lasting three half day sessions on Saturdays, meeting approximately every three to four weeks. The program design calls for the mentoring team meeting—lasting at least an hour to hour and a half–at least four times over the course of the program cycle.

FINAL

Location: The exact locations of the half day networking convenings has not been secured as of this writing—however it will most likely will be hosted by an organization or corporation in the greater Orange County area. The dates, times, and locations of the 1:1 mentoring team meetings will be determined between the mentoring teams.

Value Proposition: The program has been designed to benefit the mentees as well as the mentors to improve their capacity for strong relationship building, sharpen their analytical skills, and to further master the art of the dialogue. (Because of the mutually beneficial nature of the program philosophy and design, the program participation fees apply equally for both mentees as well as mentors.)

Cost Effectiveness: While the program has been generously underwritten by UPS to be offered in over 5 locations across the country, there are some associated fees that has been necessary to charge participants in order to off-set any costs not covered by the funder. $20 for OCA Members and $60 for Non-OCA Members, which includes one year of OCA Membership reflects the program being offered under the generous funding by UPS. (Fees are waived for UPS Employees)
