Cal State Fullerton Asian American International Film Festival

Moving Images: First Asian American International Film Festival @ Cal State Fullerton

The purpose of this international film festival is to promote global understanding by featuring cinematic productions by and about Asians and Asian Americans. The theme of this year’s festival, “Moving Images,” highlights the ways these films stir our emotions and shift conventional cinematic images of Asians and Asian Americans.

================================================

The Myth (2005, 118 minutes) Dir. Stanley Tong
Tues., Oct. 24, 4-7 p.m. in PLN 130
The archaeological discovery of the mausoleum built by China’s first emperor Qin Shihuang in 221 B.C. reveals a 2000-year-old love story between a general and a princess from a minority group during the Qin Dynasty.
Discussant: Jinghui “Jack” Liu, Department of Modern Languages & Literatures

To Live (1994, 132 min.) Dir. Zhang Yimou
Wed., Nov. 1, 4-7 p.m. in PLN 130
Through the lives of one family in twentieth-century China, this film reflects the experiences of millions of Chinese who lived through civil war only to be swept away again by decades of political turmoil as China’s leadership tried to launch the country into communism. At heart, it is a human story—of survival, of disappointment, of hope, and as the title suggests, of life.
Discussant: Lisa Tran, Department of History

Charlotte Sometimes Revealed, Part I: A Conversation with Actress Jacqueline Kim
Tues., Nov. 7, 4:00-5:15 p.m.: Guest Speaker in PLN 130
5:15-7:00 p.m.: Film Screening in PLN 130

Awards. Kim will also discuss her role in her latest film, Red Doors.
Discussant: Eliza Noh, Asian American Studies Program

Awards. Byler will also discuss his second feature AMERICANese.
Discussant: Eliza Noh, Asian American Studies Program

The Way Home (2002, 88 min.) Dir. Jeong-Hyang Lee
Wed., Nov. 15, 7-9 p.m. in PLN 130
Seven-year-old Sang-woo leaves the familiarity of fast food and electronic games in Seoul to live with his deaf-mute grandmother in a remote village in the Korean countryside. This heart-warming film about Sang-woo’s struggle to adjust to the simplicity of rural life illuminates the generation gap in contemporary South Korea.
Discussant: Kristine Dennehy, Department of History

Tokyo Godfather (2003, 92 min.) Dir. Takashi Kon
Thurs., Nov. 16, 8-10 p.m. in PLN 130

Whether you believe in fate or have a list of standards, we all have
an ideal image of Mr./Ms. Right in our mind. Many factors help us
compile this list of criteria, including (not surprisingly) one’s
cultural background. Ask yourself what’s important to you — do
these standards reflect values that are important in your family?
Does being Asian American have a great impact on how you choose your
significant other?

Join us for another interesting discussion as we muse over the image
of the Ideal Asian American Significant Other!

OCA-OC Coffee Talk: Stereotypical Asian American Careers

Tuesday, August 29, 7:30 pm - 9 pm
OCA-OC Coffee Talk: Stereotypical Asian American Careers

Tea Station - Irvine Culver
15333 Culver Dr.
Irvine, CA 92604
Restaurant Phone: 949-653-9989
Free!

Consider your Asian American friends and their jobs; examine your own career. Are you working in jobs “stereotypical” for Asian Americans? Do your parents flaunt your job title and beam with pride when they announce it to friends and family (or do they mumble it under their breaths as they change the subject to your sister/brother the doctor/lawyer)? Our career selections may be due to occupational segregation, discrimination, minority stereotypes, etc. Let’s discuss over boba tea what factors may co-exist that influence our choices, and what others are doing outside of this stereotypical Asian American box.

Cancelled: OCA-OC Workshop: Active Listening - Listen Carefully to Others

Saturday, August 26
OCA-OC Workshop: Active Listening - Listen Carefully to Others

Sorry folks - the workshop has been cancelled since Albert Wong, the speaker, will be out of town :-(.

If you’re interested in the topic however, feel free to contact Albert at: atwong@alumni.uci.edu for info. If there’s sufficient interest, we may reschedule this workshop for a future date.

Original workshop description:
Are you listening to me? Everyone has heard this question from a
parent, child, sibling, friend, teacher or coworker.
People listen differently. Stimuli pass through mental filters, such
as upbringing, background, education and culture. People use their
own perceptions to listen, which is why listening is different for
everyone and why effective communication can be difficult.

Active listening means listening for the content, meaning and
underlying attitude in every verbal and aural communication
situation. This can be a challenge. However, active listening skills
can be learned, sharpened and mastered.

This session led by Albert Wong addresses the following questions:

  • What are the elements of spoken communication?
  • What is the difference between hearing and listening?
  • What is the difference between active listening and passive listening?
  • What are the barriers to active listening?
  • What are the techniques for active listening?
  • What are the techniques for validating your perception and understanding in verbal communication?
  • What are the techniques for active listening in telephone communication?

OCA-OC Book and Film Club: “Interpreter of Maladies” by Jhumpa Lahiri

Tuesday, August 1, 7 pm
OCA-OC Book and Film Club: “Interpreter of Maladies” by Jhumpa Lahiri
Echizen Restaurant
9111 Valley View
Cypress, CA 90660
Restaurant phone: 714-828-2155

Join us for the inaugural meeting of OCA-OC’s book and film discussion club! We’ll be meeting on a regular basis over dinner to discuss interesting movies and literary works, facilitated by OCA-OC’s newest board member, Natalia Yamashiro.

Our first book will be Jhumpa Lahiri’s “Interpreter of Maladies,” winner of the 2000 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. The collection of nine short stories charts the emotional journeys of characters seeking love beyond the barriers of nations and generations, the out-of-context lives of South Asian immigrants, expatriates and first-generation Americans. In tales that “travel from India to America and back again, Lahiri speaks with universal eloquence to everyone who has ever felt like a foreigner.”

It’s not mandatory to read the book to attend, but of course you’ll be a lot more out of the discussion if you do! If you have any questions about the Book and Film Club or the book chosen, please contact Natalia at: 909-569-9655, nmyamashiro@verizon.net
