OCA’s Hate Crime Education Program
A/PIAs comprise over 50 ethnic groups and 100 language communities. Unified largely by name, Asian/Pacific Islander Americans cover the full spectrum of education, income, English proficiency, immigration, history, and civic understanding. The “model minority” myth often used by the media to chracterize the A/PIA community overlooks the distinct challenges this community faces due to its diverse elements. Consequently, the problem of hate crimes within the A/PIA community is often overlooked. To address this challenge, OCA strives to prepare communities for hate crimes and bias incidents to enable them to respond quickly and effectively; OCA also works to prevent hate crimes and bias incidents by educating people to strike against bigotry and hatred, working with local police officials, and advocating policies regarding hate crimes and bias incidents.
OCA’s Hate Crime Education Program consists of a number of different modules to address hate crime prevention and response: Action Guide, Reporting, Resources, and Workshops.
